Chinese calligraphy (Brush calligraphy) is an art unique to Asian cultures. In the history of Chinese art, calligraphy has always been held in equal importance to painting. “Shu” (calligraphy) and “Hua” (painting) are the basic skills and disciplines. 


Students will be introduced to the Chinese brush, Chinese ink, ink stick, ink stone and the paper. Students will also learn how to hold the brush correctly and also learn the basic seven standard strokes.  Calligraphy takes lots of practice and patient. 


Mrs. Penny Lee has been teaching Chinese calligraphy in our
ChineseSchool for the past 3 semesters (2009-2010).  She has learned my calligraphy in “Chinese calligraphy society of Singapore”.   She and her husband have two children in our Chinese school.

Chinese Chess is perhaps the most popular board game in the world, played by millions of people in China, other parts of Asia, and wherever Chinese have settled.  

Students will first learn the basic set of chess pieces.  The novice students should be proficient in basic chess strategies with instructional points from the coach.  Advance individuals should be able to utilized strategies on their own with minimal coaching.  But most important is that the players can raise their awareness of ability, thinking and have fun through a chessboard.   Games of this family are played in Europe and Asia, as well as in the Middle East.  Like International Chess, Chinese Chess has two opposing armies with different kinds of pieces.

Mr. Kin Lee has been teaching Chinese Chess in our school for many years, and he and his wife have two children in our Chinese school.

This new class will be an introduction class to Chinese brush painting for beginners

There will be step by step demonstrations of simple flower-and-bird painting; tutorials on artistic techniques; covering brush techniques and strokes; space and composition arrangements, and ink-water mixing.

Ms. Zhang is a new teacher to our Chinese school.  As a lover of traditional Chinese culture, she studied Chinese brush painting when she was 6 years old.  She enjoys in painting and amazes how the strokes in Chinese brush paintings are elegant, yet strong, and show the reverence that the artists have for nature.

The Chinese Yoyo’s origins can be traced back to the Ming Dynasty, where it was used as a popular pastime. This tradition has survived for more than 500 years. The Chinese Yoyo class is a free course for beginner to medium level students looking to learn a fun and rewarding traditional art. The class teaches everything from the fundamentals of the yoyo to tricks such as the Magic Knot, Leg Toss, Whip, and Vertex. 

Michael Yang is a student in the SAP class at NYCS, and has been studying the Chinese Yoyo for two years with a professional.  He is a member of Council Rock Matching Band and he has been teaching this class for one year.

This is our second year of the Chinese Art and Craft class.  Students will learn many Chinese traditional techniques and will complete 6-8 projects cover Chinese paper cuts; paper folding; hanging roll objects (掛軸); tiger wall accessories (老虎壁飾) and color painting squashes (彩繪葫蘆).  

This is also the second year of Mrs. Lee in our Chinese school.  She has taught the same class last year and the projects from her students have been displayed in our Chinese New Year celebration.  She will add many new projects in this class.

This newly created Dance and “Fashion Show” is a fun and dynamic class.  Students will learn traditional Chinese dance moves, such as Yangge (秧歌); typically use a red silk ribbon around the waist and swing the body to music played by drum, trumpet and other traditional Chinese music instruments.   Dancers will play dress up in red or green, or whatever colorful traditional costumes and perform in different dance styles to showcase their dances in our Chinese new year celebration to express their happiness.  

Mrs. Qi Zhao has been the teacher in our Chinese school for 6 years.  She has taught the language and gong fu classes.  Mrs. Zhao has been a signer and a dancer in a Dance Company in China

Mr. Li’s marital art class will focus on teaching some basic martial arts techniques, self- control of body movements, a full set of martial arts, Chu Ji Quan (fist fighting preliminary style). The martial arts exercise helps pre-teen and teenage students develop balance, control, and body- mind awareness. Also another main focus of this course is to teach cultural aspect of Kufu, its origin, its history and development.

Mr. Feiquan Li, a native of Tianjin, China, graduated from QingHuaUniversity in late 1960s and also was a member of its martial arts team. He has since been practicing martial arts as an amateur for 20 some years. He practices martial arts of Chinese National Style, Tai Chi quan (fist fighting), Tai Chi sword.  He now lives in Langhorne, PA, with his daughter and her family.

Learn how to magically turn a piece of paper into a work of art!  Students will learn the ancient art of origami, also known as paper folding, which originated in China.  In addition, students will learn other traditional Chinese paper crafts, such as paper cutting and paper ripping.  This class is great for students to immerse themselves in the Chinese culture and learn about these highly regarded arts one fold, cut, or rip at a time!

The mother and daughter team has been teaching Chinese languages classes and craft classes in different venues, including NewtownTownship for many years.  They are the owners and operators of Origami Works, a company that specializes in origami classes and instruction.    Sheron is a senior at Council Rock High School North and they are very excited to be returning to our school again to teach students more about the art of their culture.

If the child is less than 6 years old, a parent must be sit in the class with his/her child.
